You Are A Girl! You Keep Shut!
A world of living beings is a world of independence and relatedness. ‘Independence’- as in individual aspect, belonging to any race, cast, creed, religion or ‘sex’ or even an eunuch -should be Independent to live his ‘own’ life, in his ‘own’ way, with complete self-confidence, self-reliance and pride, should be permitted to live his ‘own’thoughts and fulfill his own dreams. Relatedness – as in, in our daily life, we do always try to relate to others to live happily and with complete contentment thinking either – there is someone to support me or that, it is not only me who is living the way I live, I do have others leading the same kind of life.
Though a very heavy and serious introduction for a school level magazine, however, I possibly couldn’t start off directly with – molestations, subjugated status of woman in the society, male chauvinism, sexual abuse regarding women, and finally something that I didn’t to talk about, but present social condition has forced me to – “Rape”…!Women, ladies, maidens and girls - different stages of the life of a female- is subjected to face varieties of situations that contributes to this development from an infant to a 30 year old woman. The development is harsh and crude evening the 21st century and whoever fails to face the brutality with boldness is absolutely chucked out of the process.
If the two great epics had actually been a reality, then I could vouch that from the very dawn of human life woman have been continuously subdued and insulted before the whole world however, women have continued to serve mankind. Dating back to Draupadi’s harassment before the whole court room, while, the Pandavas had lost her on a stake in the dice game, to the fact that she was ‘shared’ among 5 men as wife.Ranging down to Sita’s ‘Agnipariksha’ – a test of purity to this day’s social set up. Where everyday women are harassed and molested in the middle of the road in broad daylight to even more acts of brutality in the dark doom of night. Every other woman in the family are subjugated their position. While, others, even more subdued join the escort services!
On the contrary, it is women- the “symbol of fertility and productivity”, for whom the world exists. It is women whom we worship in the form of Goddesses and even it is women who are known to be ‘Born Fighters’. Fighters who actually win battles in their everyday life, fighting with the customs of society, and again it is women who are asked to keep shut in most of the worldly affairs.
However, today we,women – are rising. At times when our patience and our quietness are taken for granted and described as our weakness, we do speak. Though most of it remains unheard, however, we protest silently either in candle marches or loudly with sacrifices. History holds many such incidents like the sacrifice of Rani Padmini to the bravery of Rani Laxmibai.
Today with the changing view of our society, we have women in high official posts, like, a party head Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Chief Ministers, Smt. Mamata Banerjee & Mrs. Jai Lalita, Police Commissioner Mrs. Kiran Bedi to IPS officer Mrs. Damayanti Sen, and finally to our ex-President, Mrs. Pratibha Patel and many others. However, this change in mind set up is just for a few. Others haven’t shown any signs of progress. Others vote for women in the polling booths for they want their representatives to talk to the world about them, while they scorn the women at their house as, ‘You are a Girl! You keep shut!’
To change society and the recent social backdrop, first there has to be a change in views of men. Men should to accept that women are the most important part of a society whom we subdue the most. For that, writers like Taslima Nasrin should actually been couraged.
This is exactly what our mothers, aunties and may be grandmothers wanted to say, but have cried through ages without being able to express. This is exactly what many other great women like Ashapurna Devi expressed through their writings. And today, I, a mere student of class XII have expressed, after days of sulking on the social backdrop, on today’s position of women in the society. A last request to whoever reads this – please establish yourselves for the world to look up to you, for the world to set you as an example! Change the system by being a part of the system; don’t just express your grudge without any action! I would end with a question to the society in general – “How do you actually figure a woman? As a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a girl friend or as a complete woman with her individuality held high?”
